GROW: Articles and Resources

INTRODUCTION

We learn how to perceive and practice sustainable ways by engaging in wondrously diverse ideas and actions. It is important to document this growth of the sustainability “organism” and to provide people interested in sustainability with helpful resources. Terril Shorb provides lists of articles and other forms of knowledge related to sustainability, and encourages you to bring to his attention articles and related resources that you have encountered and would recommend. This data base will constantly grow and represents one small but potent aspect of the cumulative cultural memory of our collective effort to move sustainability into the societal mainstream.

BUTTERFLY CURRICULUM RESOURCES

RESOURCES FOR THE FIRST REALM »
The First Realm of the Butterfly Curriculum in our Sustainable Community Development (SCD) program helps us to better understand the natural world and our relationship with it. This includes learning about the systems and cycles of the natural environment to keep it healthy where it is so, and to help restore the health of ecosystems that have been compromised.

RESOURCES FOR THE SECOND REALM »
The Second Realm of the sustainable Community Development perspective helps us to understand the cumulative human footprint, or the resources required to fulfill our basic needs, such as for water, food, shelter, transport, to handle waste, and so on.

RESOURCES FOR THE THIRD REALM »
The Third Realm is where we consider the psychological, social, and spiritual dimensions of community, beginning with the individual and working outwards to include other humans and the other-than-human world.

RESOURCES FOR THE FOURTH REALM »
The Fourth Realm is where we learn to deepen our observations of and participation in a community’s ways of communicating across its many constituencies, and also engages in learning sustainable ways in formal and informal settings.
